2007-11-07: Port listing Möhringen arrived

The port listing for the new building in Möhringen has arrived. Contracts for internet access can be signed starting now.

2007-11-05: No Service at Filderbahnplatz 35

Until now there is no chance for us to activate any internet-access at Filderbahnplatz 35, because we have no port list. Therefore it is useless to go to WH-Netz, if you are located at Filderbahnplatz 35. As we get the needed data, we will inform you at this place.

2007-10-23: Uplink

In the evening hours our uplink is used up to 100% (you may also check this on that graph) since some weeks.
Until now, we cannot tell you when we get a bigger uplink (GBit?).

2007-10-23: Networkoutage in downtown Stuttgart

Shortly before 3pm, the network went out in all dormitories in downtown Stuttgart. This was caused by a digger that severed the cable connecting the downtown dormitories to Campus Vaihingen.
We do not know when the cable will be repaired.

2007-10-17: Network outage in dormitory Gleisdreieck

Due to maintenance on the fibre connection from EnBW between the dormitory in Möhringen and our network, the network in Möhringen will be down starting 25.10.2007 up until 26.10.2007. The exact timeframe EnBW requests is from 3am to 6am.

Update: EnBW moved the downtime to November, 9th at the same time.

2007-10-01: New terms of use

While bringing the two associations, WH-Netz and Selfnet e.V., closer together, new terms of use become effective, beginning with the 1st of October 2007.

All users will be informed via E-Mail and letter drop as well.
For those, who have already signed the current one, the new terms of use will become effective in four weeks, starting on Monday, 29th October 2007, unless you disagree to one or more of the changes made.

The changes on the terms of use make it possible to use the same terms for those, who are administrated by WH-Netz and for the members of Selfnet e.V.. Furthermore, a few minor changes have been applied, e.g. cable modems are not taken into consideration any more. Despite the changes, the key ideas of the terms of use stayed unchanged.

2007-09-26: Internet connection in Möhringen

After quite some difficulties the internet connection for the new dormitoriy Gleisdreieck in Möhringen is up and running. Thus new users can fill out the pre-registration and come to our consultation hours to have their contracts activated.

2007-09-26: Preregistration

For several weeks now WH-Netz offers a pre-registration for new contracts. New tenants simply have to connect to the network and try to surf anywhere. They will be redirected to our pre-registration page where they can enter their contract data.

As the preregistration saves us a lot of time, we decided to give everyone some more motivation: Everyone who filled out a pre-registration will be preferred in the queue in Vaihingen!

2007-09-18: A few hours without the net, starting friday, 11am.

Next friday we will install a new nat-router and upgrade our border router to support gigabit-ethernet. Depending on how things go we will also start with restructurng the dormitory network.
Thus, there will be no internet connection for at least two hours.

2007-03-20: New downtown consultation hours

After many preparations we now opened a new office in downtown Stuttgart. Starting immediately, all users from city-dormitories can come to our new consultation hours in the former AXA-Building at Heilmannstrasse 4 (AKA 'Red Bunker'). Every monday from 6pm to 7pm people from Selfnet as well as WH-Netz are around to help you with your registration or any problems you might encounter with our network.

To get to the new office you have to use the right entrance 4B (NOT the main entrance 4A). Our office is behind the first door to the right, labelled 'Büro Selfnet'.

2007-03-20: Possible Outage of Internet Connection

Because of hardware maintenance at BelWue, there might be outages of the internet connection starting from 7 o'clock pm, today, march 20th. The maintenance is due to be completed at 8:30 pm.

2007-02-08: Inner-City network outage

Due to maintenance at K1, Uni Stuttgart, City-Campus the network connection for the following dormitories might be disrupted from 7:45am until 8:45am: MAx-Kade-Dormitory, Theodor-Heuss-Strasse, Wiederholdstrasse, Brückenstrasse, Alexanderstrasse, Studentenhotel at Neckarstrasse.
We would like to use this downtime to do some maintenance on our own routers for city-dormitories, thus the internet connection for all inner-city-dormitories might be disrupted until noon.

2006-12-20: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

The WH-Netz crew would like to wish you Merry Christmas and a Happ New Year.

Since we're going to spend the holidays with our familiees too, and since the time between Christmas and New Year is perfect for taking a few well-deserved days off, our next support session will be next year on the third of January.

Additionally the holidays will be used for conducting several tests, which is why there may be outages of the following systems on December 12th:
- WH-Netz Webserver
- SMTP-Proxy (disturbance of email-sending)

2006-11-24: Network failure Thuesday, 28.11.2006

Next Thuesday (28.11.2006) we expect a power cutoff in Allmandring 8a. The reason is the laying of new power lines. Unfortunately we didn't get a clear word about the concrete power loss period. We were told the worst case is from 8:00 am to 5 pm and if it goes really bad even once again on Wednesday. However it is also possible, that nothing happens at all because there seem to be variances with the electrician which might lead to engaging an different company.

2006-11-02: Replacement Kade-Router

Today, our Router at Max-Kade dormitory crashed for the second time in two weeks. We bought some new hardware in order to replace the older components. When we changed the mainboard, we discovered some damaged capacitors on it.
This Router is responsible for Alexanderstr., Johannesstr. and Wiederholdstr. .
We hope the new Computer will do its job for some years without crashes now ;-)

Friday, 23.06.2006 from 8 a.m. to ca. 12 p.m.

the power will be shut down on the part of the 'Studentenwerk' in
several dormitories in Vaihingen which will also affect our server room.
During this period the whole network in Vaihingen will not be
functioning. The internet connection of the dormitories in the city will
be off, too.
We appreciate your understanding.

Your Wh-Netz Team

2006-06-20: City network breakdown yesterday evening

Due to still unresolved problems with our Xen, runing on Avalon, our city- and Selfnet-Router, the internet connection for the city-dormitories was down for a few hours.

2006-06-12: Maintenance work - outage city dormitories / connection to selfnet

Due to maintanance work. the city dormitories are offline between 7 and 12 p.m. this evening. The connection to selfnet is affected, too.

2006-06-12: Selfnet LAN-Party

On June, 23th to 25th, there is a LAN party arranged by Selfnet e.V. We start at 5 p.m. on Friday and end on Sunday in the morning. Venue is the exercise room in V47 (Campus Vaihingen). Of course participance is for free.

2006-05-21: Network breakdown city-dormitories

Today until 6 p.m., the dormitories Nordbahnhofstr., Birkenwaldstr., Kernerstr., Landhausstr. and Neckarstr. were offline. The reason was a amok running router in the dormitory Nordbahnhof.

2006-05-20: WH-Netz is looking for new members

Is your study boring and full of theory? Do you want some practical experience that shows you what this theory can be good for? In our club you can achieve valuable experience in areas like
Databaseadminstration, Computer Networks, Linux Administration, Webdesign, Customer Support, Data Security, Softwaredesign, Accountancy, foreign Languages, Teamwork ...
With more than 1000 Internet connections, more than 30 members and after more than 10 years, our club has become an organization that operates very professional in many ways. In some areas (e.g. network security) we established standards where comparable companies would get jealous of.
All this is done by a group of nonsalaried working students, working just for the fun of it.
Besides the job-related qualification that arises from this action, members get
- pizza after our opening hour
- extension of habitation time in the dormitory
- a nice t-shirt
- free Internet access in the dormitory
- periodical presentations relating to computer and network themes

If you're interested in helping us, you are cordially invited in visiting us after our opening hour!

2006-05-17: Power breakdown Vaihingen

Due to a power breakdown yesterday evening our network was offline until this morning.

2006-05-02: Hardware exchange in main router

The keyboard controller in our main router went west. Thus we bought a new main board which we want to install today evening. Durig the exchance the internet will be unreachable. The same applies to our www- and ftp-Server. Due to the high number of network interfaces in the router the modification may take a while.

We start about 8 o' clock.

Update: Unfortunately it took more time than we expected. The broken mainboard was so old that it didn't have a standard cpu cooler. Thus we had to move the cooler socket, too.
However, there is also good news: We used the opportunity to upgrade the three most important network interfaces - DMZ, webserver and NAT gateway - to gigabit. That includes amongst others the web proxy and our Linux mirrors http://ftp.server.whnetz/

2006-04-11: DNS breakdown

Since yesterday evening (Mo. 10.04.) our DNS had some failures. Due to that, domainnames couldnt be resolved into IPs.

2006-04-04: Reboot Main-Router

We found the cause of the slow Internet connection during the last few days. In order to solve the Problem we have to reboot one of our main routers. We hope that the connection will be cut off only for a short time. If futher problems occur, the breakdown would be for a longer time.

2006-02-19: Service: OpenVPN

Our OpenVPN-service, which allows every user to access stuff in the WH-Netz from anywhere was now changed from TCP to UDP to reduce latency.
Therefore you need to re-download all certificates & configuration files from our dbselfservice, if you have used this service before.

More information is available here:
Knowledgebase

2006-01-28: Public IPs

From this week on the BelWue has given us enough public IPs that everybody can have his own.

How the new system will be configured is mostly in our hands.

Due to many technical, political and sozial considerations we collected our thoughts in our Wiki.
Here you can see the most recent state (german only):

https://www.wh-netz.de/knowledgebase/ExterneIPs

If you have an opinion or a question about it, don't hesitate to post it in our Forum:

https://www.wh-netz.de/community/forum/list?1

We are looking forward to see your contributions.

2006-01-19: Port-Scans

We are currently working on a new system which port-scans all pcs and checks them for security holes.

All information about the scans will be available in our dbselfservice.

2005-12-21: No consulting hour at 26th and 28th

Unfortunately none of us can be here for a consulting hour on the above mentioned days.

We wish you all happy holidays.

2005-11-29: Network uplink problems

We had and have problems concerning our network uplink theese days.

After several tests with different fiber to copper converters, different fibers and changes on the routers at bouth ends, we have a pretty well throughput again.

Soon the RUS will measure the actual quality of the optical fibers. In the medium term a new fiber is planned.

Thanks very much for the friendly help of the colleagues of RUS and BelWue!

2005-11-27: Maintenance work on proxy.wh-netz.de at 27.11.2005 18:45-19:45

Our HTTP-proxy gets more RAM and additional harddisks to compensate for the increased load.

2005-11-21: Nachruf

2005-11-14: WH-Funk remodelling

Some people may already have noticed that WH-Funk is not availble at the time. We work on it to improve WH-Funk's stability, speed and the distribution of the accesspoints.

2005-09-29: Changes to traffic quota [update]

the traffic accounting has been changed considerably. Before September
2005, we had a fixed quota of 8GB for downloads and 2GB for uploads
per user per month, ignoring the destination of the traffic and the
different cost for different peer connections.

Since September we account for the different cost of each target for
the BelWue and charge the traffic accordingly. The main goal here is
to reduce the costs for BelWue but allow our users more traffic at the
same time.

We categorize traffic into the following classes:
- Internal (within WH-Netz)
- Selfnet (other student dormitories)
- Uni Stuttgart
- BelWue (other Unis in Baden-Wuerttemberg)
- Peers (Organisation that are directly connected to BelWue)
- DFN (other Unis in Germany)
- Uplink (all other targets around the world)

A detailed table with explanations of the categories can be found here:

http://www.wh-netz.de/knowledgebase/TrafficQuota

You can find the traffic class for any target here:
href='http://www.wh-netz.de/support/ipbudget

Our proxy server (proxy.wh-netz.de) reduces outside traffic by caching
frequently used pages. Of course we pass these savings on to you. If
you use the proxy, we charge only 90% of the traffic points. Pages
that were already in the proxy cache cost only 10%.

Every user will get 4 traffic points per hour which can be accumulated
up to 8000 points. This gives almost 3000 traffic points per month, or
between 3GB and 300GB depending on the traffic class. The new system
is still in the beta test, so the weights of the different targets and
the limits will probably still change.

Sorry if the traffic quota display has been incorrect in the last few
days.

2005-09-22: Changes to Traffic Accounting/Quota:

At the moment, wh-netz is working on a new traffic accounting system. The old traffic quota summary is therefore not working right now. The new system is currently in beta status. The current traffic is still accounted. Account locking will just be delayed until the new system is released.
The new accounting system will make it possible to download a larger amount of data and reduce the costs for BelWue. The new system is based on traffic classes (based on the target ip), which have different values.
Further information are available in the knowledgebase. At the moment only in german, but we are working on it.

2005-09-01: Maintenance work Thursday 01.09.2005

Due to maintenance on the main database, network outages are likely.

2005-08-24: Maintenance work on www.wh-netz.de 24.08.2005

Our Websever gets new Hardware during the course of the day, so www.wh-netz.de and ftp.server.whnetz will be offline for approximately one hour.

2005-08-17: Interruption of electricity Friday, 26th Aug 2005 7am-1pm

The Studentenwerk Stuttgart has announced that on Friday, the 26th Aug 2005, the Allmandring I dorm (and other dorms on the Vaihingen Campus) will be without electricity from approx. 7am to 1pm.

As all our routers, servers and backbone-switches are located in Allmandring I, the whole dorm network, including the network in the city dorms, will be down during that time.

2005-08-08: Maintenance work monday 08.08.2005 20:00-22:30

There was some maintenance work on our border router on monday 08.08.2005 between 8:00PM and 10:30PM. During that time internet access was unavailable.

2005-06-27: network failures

Tomorrow, the 28.06.2005 we will work on some routers. Due to that the network will be partly down during the evening. Affected parts are the connection to selfnet and games, the city dormitorys and wh-wireless. We work for a quick accomplishment.

Your WH-Netz Team

2005-06-14: Network down from 11.50 to 12.30

Today we had a total network breakdown between 11.50 and 12.30. But we weren't resposible ;)
Parts of the hardware relatet to the Kablemodems was removed and the uplink with it.

2005-06-10: Gigabit Link

Since last night the link between Selfnet and WH-Netz is Gigabit. This surely will improve performance :)

2005-05-30: Router maintenance on Sunday (2005-05-29) between 17:45 and 19:45

Last Sunday our routing to the Internet was changed and 3 routers were merged into one new machine. That's why the internet connection was down for almost two hours. We'll try to post advance notification about downtime in the future. Here's the updated network diagram.

2005-05-02: WH-Netz is celebrating: Cablemodem network switched off

There is nothing more to say.

2005-03-17: New knowledgebase structure !

A part of our internal knowlegdebase is transfered each night to this website to give you some information about our network, configuration of programs and other linux-related subjects.

After the main power failure this morning (at about 9 o'clock), the switches in Straussaecker 3 were disfonctionning. They are again available since about 11 o'clock in the evening. Please tell us if there is still a problem.

2004-10-23: Powerloss on Saturday, 23th October 2004

There is an announcment at the university that this saturay the electrical power will be gone at least in Pfaffenwaldring 47.

Our uplink to the BelWue goes through this block, so it is very likely that the internet will be gone too (same is true for Selfnet).

Also our backbone switch for Vaihingen is likely to become offline. That means that there will be no internal network for all switch users (10.33. ip address). This problem does not apply to selfnet.

2004-10-20: Straußäcker 3 - waiting is over!!!

We still don't have a list that relates rooms to Networkports, but we managed to figure out some Connections. With these we were able to calculate the rest of the Connections.

This means: Every new networkaccount will be ethernet and modemusers can change from modem to ethernet.

Just bring your modem, dormitory lease contract and passport to the consulting hour. Subusers don't need to bring a modem...

2004-10-07: Network failure

If you asked yourself why the network wasn't working: 'James' didn't wanna work anymore. James is the DHCP-Server and DNS-Cache. Thus you couldn't obtain the IP address automatically and couldn't resolve network names anymore.
Now it's working again, but you surely noticed alredy. ;-)

2004-08-09: malfunction of cable modems in Allmandring II / III

The cable modems in Allmandring 24 and 26 don't work anymore since last friday. Affected persons should change their contract to the new twisted-Pair connection.
We hope you understand that we don't repair the modem network because it means too much work for us.

2004-08-01: Modem support ceased

There won't be any further support for modems in the dormitories Straußäcker 1 + 2 and in Allmandring 24 - 26. Anyone appearing with a modem will be changed to LAN.

2004-08-01: Changes in Allmandring 18 - 22

After renovation in the houses Allmandring 18 - 22 the internet will be provided by Selfnet. Nr. 18 + 20 are already done.

2004-08-01: Straußäcker 3 - still waiting

We are still waiting for the list which assigns the switchports to your rooms. Please be patient.

2004-08-01: New dormitories in WH-Netz soon

When the uplinks to the new dormitories (Johannesstraße, Rippoldsauer Straße and Wiederholdstraße) will be available, we'll soon be able to connect them to WH-Netz.

2004-08-01: Become a volunteer. One and only chance!

DHCP, DNS, SIP and NAT. Never heard or your daily tools? Don't care.

This is everday stuff at WH-Netz and if you want to learn about Linux and Networking or improve your knowledge WH-Netz is the right place! You have the opportunity to have a productive network with about 1000 users as your playground. You can discuss, try and implement your own ideas with the current team (nice guys).

To be honest: You won't get a chance like this outside university...

2004-06-29: Solution for the upcoming Mail-Blockade

Hello,

we have good news regarding the upcoming email-blockade by the Belwue:
We have found a possibility, that allows everyone using a mail-provider with support for SMTP-Auth (via port 25 as well as 587) to send mails using a mail-program (like Outlook) as before without restrictions, e.g. Web.de will work.

We are now asking you to reconfigure your mail-programs to use authorization (SMTP-Auth) immediatelly in order to check, if your provider offers port 25 (or 587) for SMTP-Auth! How you can check this is described in our last mail (can be found on www.wh-netz.de) and here:

  http://www.wh-netz.de/knowledgebase/howtos/EmailProgramme.de.htm

Please compare your results with the data found on our homepage so that we can find mistakes and missing entries. The right place to talk about your experiences ist still our forum:

  http://www.wh-netz.de/community/forum/list.htm?f=1

We strongly suggest that you don't hesitate reconfiguring your mail-program, otherwise occuring problems can only be fathomed by
indepth investigations; problems that might be caused by us, your provider or you.

Time is running out! Because we need at least one day for testing until the final block is actived by the Belwue, our firewall will block unauthorized mails from tomorrow night on!

For those with an technically interest in the matter, here is a brief explanation about what will happen with your mails in the future:

Connections to port 587 won't be mangled, because 587 will remain open. Connections to port 25 are 'caught' on our main-router and are sent to a special server (our SMTP-proxy) which won't be blocked by the BelWue. This server simulates your (provider's) real mail-server to you. The server takes your authentication-data and authenticates the connection to your real mail-server. When the connection is approved positiv, your complete mail will be sent out.

Regards,

   your WH-Netz-Team

2004-06-17: WH-Funk WLAN network goes online

Our WLAN network is now online.
Every user staying near one of our network Access-Points (AP) can use it for free!

For those, who don't have an AP nearby, it is possible to rent an AP for 100 EUR from us to have WLAN for you and your neighbourhood.

Private APs aren't allowed in our network!

Further questions as always to: support@wh-netz.de

2004-06-16: Changes in how you can send mails from the dormitory

Hallo,

Siehe: http://www.belwue.de/security/tcp25.html

http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/48121
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/48135

(Anleitungen siehe
http://www.wh-netz.de/knowledgebase/howtos/MailRelay.de.htm)

----------------
Was wird weiterhin funktionieren:
- Emails abholen
- Alle Webmail-Oberflächen (Mails im Browser schreiben)
- Mail-Anbieter mit AUTH-SMTP oder mit SMTP-SSL (z.B. GMX)
- kleinere Mail-Anbieter ohne Sender Spamschutz (z.B. Uni-Stuttgart)

Euer WH-Netz Tutorium.
---------------------- english version ------------------------

Hello,

The BelWue (scientific network of Baden-Wuerttemberg; providing our
Internet-link) has decided to block every outgoing email if not
sent via a BelWue-mailrelay from now on.
For details see: http://www.belwue.de/security/tcp25.html

This has far reaching consequences und most users will have to change
their email configuration in order to be able to send mail (receiving
mail is not affected). Thus you should read this email carefully.

Background is the massive spread of spam mails including right wing
extremist content also from dormitories in BaWue by systems infected with

the Internet worm Sober.G. Vide:

http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/48121 (in german)
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/48135 (in german)

In theory this new block of port 25 should not have consequences if you
use wh-netz, selfnet or a BelWue mail relay for outgoing emails.
(see instructions (in german) on:
http://www.wh-netz.de/knowledgebase/howtos/MailRelay.de.htm )

If you don't use this mail relay in your mail program instead of
the server of a your mail-provider you will not be able to send emails
from today. People using different port for outgoing mail, like SMTPS
(TLS/SSL) via port 465 are not affected.

So far with the theory. Practically this unfortunately has the
consequence that mails sent out of the dormitories having an addresser
field (the '_from'_ field) from one of the big provider (e.g. GMX,
genion.de...) or a big company will often be considered as spam. The
reason: These mails are sent using our or the BelWue mail relay instead
of the server of the respective provider.

Additionally anti spam mechanisms like SPF, domain keys, caller-ID and
other are not usable any more, since they presume that there is an
authenticated connection (SMTP-Auth) to the respective Provider.

Thus to furthermore be able to send emails from the dormitories without
the risk that the mail will be treated as spam, we suggest that you use
an university account as addresser (likemas12345@stud.uni-stuttgart.de).

(If you have an own little domain you usually shouldn't have problems
using accounts from from this domain too.)

There are several Opportunities to circumvent these restrictions, but
they need to be supported by the mail provider.
Here they are:
- AUTH-SMTP: Password secured transmission using port 587
e.g. possible with GMX: mail.gmx.de port: 587
- SMTP-SSL: Encrypted transmission using port 465
e.g. possible with Freenet: mx.freenet.de port: 465
(But authenticated or SSL/TLS encrypted SMTP on port 25 will not be
possible too!)

Besides, everybody writing mails WITHOUT a mail program, using the web
site of the provider instead, is not affected.

We are going to write HOWTOs for various mail programs and publish them
on our websites. However, we need to ask you to address questions not to
us but to the forum. Otherwise we would be overwhelmed by the expected
number of questions.

We (Selfnet und WH-Netz) wouldn't have established the blockade this way
and also cannot influence the decision of the BelWue, so please don't
complain to us.

Summary:
--------
This will still work:
- fetch emails
- all web front ends (writing mails in the web browser)
- mail provider with AUTH-SMTP or with SMTP-SSL (e.g. GMX)
- smaller mail provider without spam guard (e.g. Uni-Stuttgart)

This won't work anymore:
- mail provider without AUTH-SMTP and without SMTP-SSL (e.g. Web.de)

WH-Netz Team.

2004-06-08: Cabling of Straussi 3 delayed

We are sorry, but the cabling of Straussi 3 will be delayed further, because the net hasn't been handed over to us yet.
We will notify you when the net is ready as soon as possible.
